Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Sometimes when a tooth is damaged or dead, it is often necessary to remove the pulp and any other debris or germs which may be inside the tooth causing harm. This is called a root canal treatment. The tooth is cleaned out thoroughly from top to bottom and a root filling material is placed inside the roots to seal the tooth and prevent any germs from getting inside and causing infection or abscess.

Root Canal Treatments are available privately and on the NHS. If you choose to have a root treatment provided privately then the dentist can use modern techniques to ensure the tooth is cleaned out as thoroughly as possible. This will involve using modern, more sophisticated tools and chemicals with a greater allowance of time which will ultimately increase the chance of success of the treatment.

Fillings

When a tooth has a simple cavity which hasn’t progressed too deeply into the tooth, we will provide a filling. Cavities are caused by sugar and poor oral hygiene. We will often take x-rays of your teeth to look for small cavities between your teeth or under the surface. Early diagnosis and treatment will result in smaller and easier fillings.

If you choose to have a filling provided privately you can be assured that we will provide better quality and modern materials resulting in a smoother finish often with much better aesthetics. You can also opt to have tooth-coloured fillings placed in your back teeth rather than the old-fashioned silver amalgam fillings.

Dentures (Full and Partial)

Sometimes a tooth will become so broken down or heavily-filled that it is too weak to remain viable. For these teeth, we will recommend placing a crown. This is simply a false cap which is made to fit over the tooth and strengthen it preventing any further fracture.

Crowns are available on the NHS with limited choice and privately.

We will also provide you with a home bleaching kit which will contain syringes of peroxide-based bleach. You can be assured that any bleach we will provide is completely safe for your teeth and will not damage them in any way. You will be shown how to use the bleaching trays with the whitening gel and then it’s time to start your treatment at home.

Your teeth will whiten gently and controllably after every application and you can choose how frequently to use the whitening gel according to how white you would like your teeth to become.

If you choose to have a crown provided privately, you have a wealth of choices available to you. Depending on your choice, private crowns can look super-realistic and impossible to identify from natural teeth or be super strong and able to withstand the hardest bite. Our private crowns will fit beautifully ensuring a good peripheral seal which is essential for prolonging the life of the tooth.

Implants

When you have lost one or more teeth, you have the option of having implants placed to replace the missing tooth or teeth. Implants are at the cutting-edge of dentistry and are becoming more affordable and more popular.

An implant is simply a small titanium screw which is gently placed under the gum where the tooth or teeth are missing. After a few months, this screw becomes fused to your bone and is then strong enough to support a crown, bridge or denture.

The advantage of having implants to replace missing teeth is that there is no drilling or damage needed to the teeth next to the gap - as is the case with bridgework.

The only other option to replace a missing tooth is to wear a denture which many people find intolerable and so implants offer a new way of replacing teeth in a safe, comfortable and predictable way.

If you choose to have an implant placed, we will send you to see a surgeon who will place the titanium screw according to our instructions. We will then provide the final restoration here at the Kirriemuir Dental Practice once the implant has fused and is strong.

Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment involves moving teeth into proper alignment using a brace. This is especially useful for correcting rotated or misaligned teeth or correcting a crowded mouth where teeth may overlap to some degree. te Usually braces are removable plastic plates with springs and clasps or fixed onto the teeth with cement (train-tracks).

There are also more aesthetic options available privately such as Invisalign and ClearStep if you want your brace to be as discreet as possible.

Here at the Kirriemuir Dental Practice we can offer removable braces to our child patients for the simplest of corrections. For more complex treatments we will refer our patients to a local specialist orthodontic practice.

Cosmetic Dentistry
  • Tooth-coloured fillings
Often patients are looking for a highly aesthetic finish from their fillings, and aren’t happy with amalgam (silver) fillings. If this is the case, we can provide tooth-coloured fillings that blend in with the natural shade of your teeth.
  • Tooth-coloured crowns
If you do not like the appearance of metal NHS crowns, at KDP we can provide you with a tooth coloured crown made from the highest quality e.Max ceramic which is extremely strong and will match the colour of your natural teeth.
  • Aesthetic veneers
A veneer is a thin ceramic facing that is placed on front teeth to improve their appearance and sometimes to bring them into line with adjacent teeth.
We can provide e.Max ceramic veneers to achieve an impressive aesthetic result for your front teeth.
  • Tooth whitening
Also known as bleaching, tooth whitening is achieved by applying a special chemical to the teeth to make them appear brighter. This can be done both in-surgery and at home using tooth trays that are specially moulded for your teeth. Ask your dentist about Phillips Zoom whitening!
